Context, History, and Stop

Conversation is durable Session state. Context, Stop, Retry, export, and rewind all operate against that recorded history, but they have different boundaries.

Use the attachment control above the composer for material that is not already available in the Workspace. Uploaded files become immutable references with one of two scopes:

  • Once — selected for the next accepted turn, then consumed after that turn begins durably;
  • Session — remains selected for future turns until you remove it.

Images may be up to 10 MiB. Other supported documents may be up to 25 MiB. Extracted text or OCR stored for a reference is capped at 256 KiB.

Removing a reference from the composer does not rewrite a historical turn that already used it. History keeps an immutable relationship so the past response can still be audited and the attachment can still be previewed or downloaded.

Choose History from an open Session. Search matches literal text without case sensitivity across requests, responses, errors, and context metadata. Choose the current Session or all Sessions as the scope.

Export produces either:

A readable transcript for review or handoff.

Export is a copy, not a backup of the complete runtime. It does not include the working tree, every data store, or enough information to restore Axocoatl. See Data and backup.

Use Stop in the Session header or composer while a turn is running. Axocoatl identifies the active turn by its durable ID so a delayed command cannot cancel a different, newer turn.

Stop is cooperative:

  1. visible streaming is interrupted;
  2. a tool already executing may continue to a safe boundary;
  3. the turn is recorded as stopped or interrupted;
  4. completed file, network, or external-service effects are not rolled back.

If the connection dropped, the workbench hydrates the active-turn endpoint before it re-enables Stop. A rejection means the target turn changed or was no longer active; refresh History before acting again.

Retry re-sends the request that produced a prior response. It is disabled when that turn used immutable attached context because silently substituting the current attachment selection would change the request. Attach the files again and send a new turn instead.

Retry can repeat tool effects. Review the original route and current Workspace state before using it on a mutating request.

Rewind is available from History for an autonomous single-Agent Session when no turn is active and no attempt set is unresolved. It moves the durable conversation head to the selected point and prefills the earlier request for revision.

Rewind does not:

  • erase the old ledger entries;
  • delete attachments or memory already persisted;
  • restore files or Git state;
  • reverse network calls or other external effects;
  • reattach context from the old turn.
  1. Stop or wait for the active turn.
  2. Finish any unresolved attempt set.
  3. Inspect Git and external state.
  4. Open History, choose the target turn, and confirm rewind.
  5. Review the prefilled request, reattach required context, and send only when repeating its effects is safe.
